THE BALTIC JOB

Sea is a powerful magnet. It speaks to our hearts and untold desires. Standing on the beach is standing at the frontier. It makes your mind wonder about the possibilities lying beyond the familiar. Or at least it is a good place to get a tan or walk your dog. Whatever the reason may be, we all come back time and time again to experience it.

Many of us like the idea of living close to the sea and, I am sure, I am not the only one looking at the estate agent's front windows whenever I visit a charming seaside village.

So it happens that last year, while travelling along the Baltic coast, we stumbled onto an opportunity to work on a seaside project. The plot of land was just outside the protected coastline zone but close enough to the beach so one could still hear the sea breeze.

As the land plot was quite large it was subdivided into four parcels allowing to build four new homes.

The remoteness of the location dictated that these houses were likely to be used as summer homes or for weekend retreats. So the design was optimised for a short stay and affordability. The house design builds on a long tradition of timber architecture in the region. It is simple in its materials and form but with a modern twist.
